The Southlands Foundation

Connecting People, Nature and Horses

Welcome to The Southlands Foundation - a registered 501c3 since 1983, where equine education, conservation and community engagement flourish as vibrantly as they did the year our barn was founded in 1938. Often referred to as “the Gateway to Rhinebeck,” Southlands provides a unique experience for riders, nature enthusiasts and anyone seeking a deeper connection to the land. Through our riding lessons, equine assisted programs and immersive camps, we invite you to become part of a living legacy where tradition meets modern stewardship and every visit creates a lasting impact.

The Land & Trails of Southlands

Spanning nearly 200 acres in Rhinebeck, NY, Southlands is a sanctuary where history, nature and community come together. Our trails, forests, acres of wildflower meadows, pollinator and aquatic habitats invite exploration on foot or horseback.

Almost 90% of our land is held in a conservation easement by a Scenic Hudson and features a wide range of well cared for and wild biomes.

Whether its to ride, hike or simply wander, we hope you enjoy your time at Southlands!

“Some tell of their riding, but more tell about learning to love the land and the creatures on it – to understand growing things – to learn to live and let live – and how their time spent on Southlands helped them cope better with the problems in their individual lives.”

— Deborah Dows, Founder, The Southlands Foundation
